What is uptalk?

When we ask a question which requires a yes or no answer – Do you live near here?– our intonation rises. Sometimes we use this intonation throughout our speech. Because it is similar to the question intonation, it implies we are waiting for a response – to be assured, reassured, confirmed or validated. This form of intonation generally does not instill confidence. (Although, when a leader is too direct and stern, sometimes it can be used to soften their tone!)

In this short video I speak with Voice to Word coach, Mark Prince, about why developing awareness of this vocal habit can help us become express more certainty, instill more confidence and be more effective in our communications.
